«His layering of touch and tone to express the Barcarolle’s dreamlike atmosphere was a miracle of refinement»
Bachtrack on Nikolai Lugansky
Nikolai Lugansky, who displays the greatest sophistication, sensitivity and «crystalline beauty» (The Financial Times) in his Chopin interpretations, presents us a programme with classics of romantic music literature. The early work, Suite bergamasque, is one of Debussy’s most famous piano works full of ravishing music. The third movement «Clair de lune», remains one of the most popular pieces ever written for the instrument. It is – just like Debussy’s virtuosic L’Isle joyeuse – a great example of impressionism. After that you will hear Chopin’s rhapsody on Venice, the Barcarolle, and his lyrical and contemplative Ballade No. 4, followed by Scriabin’s Sonata No. 2.
In the works of his great compatriot Rachmaninoff, Lugansky impresses again and again with his breathtaking virtuosity. As artistic director of the «Rachmaninoff Festival» in Tambov and as supporter of the composer’s former residence there, he is one of the most outstanding interpreters of the composer’s works. This too applies to Rachmaninoff’s Préludes op. 32, highlights of late romantic piano music.
